What does patio repair involve?

Patios take a hammering. Years of foot traffic, garden furniture, frost and tree roots slowly work against the bed underneath, and the result is slabs that rock, sink, crack or sit proud of their neighbours. Apart from looking untidy, an uneven patio is a trip hazard and often holds puddles that turn green over winter.

Most patio problems come down to what is going on beneath the surface. Many older patios across Yorkshire were laid on a few dabs of mortar or a thin layer of sand, which gives way over time. When we repair a patio, we lift the affected slabs, clean them up, rebuild a firm, full mortar bed and relay them to the correct levels and falls so that rainwater runs away from the house.

Where flags are cracked or snapped, we replace them with the closest available match in colour, size and thickness. Natural Yorkshire stone, Indian sandstone and concrete flags each need slightly different handling, and we work with all of them. We also re-bed loose coping stones on garden walls, steps and raised beds, which are a common source of wobble and water ingress.

Once the slabs are relaid, the joints are pointed to lock everything together. If the rest of the patio is sound, we can repair just the problem area; if most of it has failed, we will tell you honestly whether a fuller relay makes more sense.
